Soil compaction (hardness) prevents water penetration, reduces the effectiveness of fertilizers and pesticides, and hinders plant root growth. It cannot be ignored because there are cases where agricultural products lose up to 30% due to hardness.

Soil hardness tester (often called a penetration tester) is used to determine the hardness of soil and other materials, and identify the problem area of soil hardness before it affects the soil productivity.
